Barbel is generally a peaceful creature. But large specimens often manifest predatory tendencies. Then they will not let a small fisherman pass by.
Who would not want to catch a large barbel? A barbel with a size of 70 or 80 cm is a worthy rival for the angler. This beautiful fish fights desperately when fighting, and in a strong current it can hardly be dealt with. If a reservoir is found in which there are such large barbel, the fisherman will have to use all his skill and, possibly, resort to an unusual bait in order to realize the dream of catching trophy fish. Only persistent anglers are rewarded with a good catch. Of course, this also applies to professionals - "shukara", specialists in fishing for carp and catfish. But along with patience, the right choice of bait plays an important role.
Illumination on the river
Once, my colleague Maxim and I were fishing on the Kuban river. Maxim caught a barbel on a floating wobbler, while I, with feeder gear, had to be content with a little chub. At first, I puzzled for a long time over why the barbel rejected the maggot and took the wobbler - an imitation of a small fish. It dawned on me when I saw many fry of white fish, which were located directly on the coast. They formed an ideal forage base not only for predators, but also for large non-predatory fish. And just large barbel, apparently, more often than anglers think, feed on fish juveniles. When white fish spawns, barbel feed on larvae hatching from eggs.
Whole fish or half
Then I thought that targeted fishing for bait should lead to success. True, the number of bites is small, but the chances of catching a really large barbel are increased unusually. It is best to take a roasting bird or bleak about 2-3 cm long. Due to the narrow form, they most attractively play on the course and serve as a strong visual irritant. And you can cut a larger fish in half and then catch it on the tail half. The advantage of the cut fish is that it additionally emits a seductive smell. It is easy to catch such fish with the help of a lift or a light float fishing rod. Three or four fish is enough for the first half of the day, the rest will go to the refrigerator as a reserve. However, the fresher the bait fish, the better.
In addition, frozen and thawed fish are very soft and easily jump off the hook when casting. And the smell of fresh fish is more attractive to fish.
The best hooks for this fishing, in my opinion, are Ryder N ° 4–6 - they allow you to optimally serve the bait fish. The smaller of the two pallets reliably holds it, the larger one remains free and, when hooked, easily bites into the mouth of a barbel. Pierce both lips of the fish with a small hook below. Try to choose a hook that is not too small. I have a leash of Fox Barbel Braid braid with a breaking load of 5 kg. This fishing line was created by English experts for catching barbel. It has a subtle brownish-white color, very soft and resistant to abrasion. The leash length of 60 cm is ideal in most cases; when fishing in strong currents, the leash can be shorter. Usually simple bottom equipment is used. On a fishing line with a diameter of 0.30 mm, first put on a sinker with a swivel, which should be so heavy that it remains lying on the bottom and is not drifted by the current. To adapt to different strengths of the current, weights of various weights will help. After the sinker, put on two rubber beads on the main line and then tie the durable swivel with the Grinner knot. Rubber beads serve as a shock absorber to prevent damage to the swivel assembly.
We usually use Heavy Feeder rods of 3.60 or 3.90 m in length. By placing them steeply upwards, you will prevent the drift of the rigging over the course. The bite signaling device is a thin fiberglass top. She should have a 2 oz test (50 g), as large fish are expected to be caught. If you don’t have a feeder rod, you can catch it with a carp class of 2 lb, but it should be about the same length as the feeder. I recommend a reel with a free wheel spool or models with a powerful brake.
I recommend to read:
Leash, important things
It is important to have a reliable stand for the rod, because the bite of a barbel is very powerful. Although the Butterfly stand locks your rod, you should not leave it unattended. The most effective way to catch in the immediate vicinity of the observed flock of fry. On a mild course I managed to catch quite successfully, but large barbel, which often live apart, willingly keep in calm deep water.
