Black flounder fishing

In this article I will tell you about all the nuances and features of flounder fishing in the Black Sea that I learned by devoting fishing to many years of my life.

Flounder is a bottom sea fish that lives throughout the oceans, however we will talk about flounder fishing in the Black Sea. This fish spends all its life on the bottom surface. The originality of this fish lies in the fact that it spends all its life lying on one side, which soon becomes white, and the eye from it gradually moves to the other side. This fish can gain in weight up to 15 kg. It feeds mainly on small fish and all kinds of crustaceans. Her hunting method is ambush: the flounder lies at the bottom, half buried in the sand, and waits until the victim swims past it at a fairly short distance. The fish makes a lightning throw, and swallows the prey, thanks to the huge mouth. In order to prevent the flounder from being noticed by its victims and enemies, it can change its color and adapt to the environment. Once, scientists launched a flounder into an aquarium with a bottom painted in black and white. Soon the flounder also became like a chessboard. All these interesting facts, as well as excellent gastronomic qualities, and the fascination of fishing make this fish the coveted prey of a fisherman.

Flounder Fishing Tackle

Now I will tell you about how to make a good and reliable tackle for catching this bottom predator. For this we need: a strong fishing rod 3-4 m., And a test of 80-200 g., A powerful non-inertia reel with a spool (you can read about the reel here), which can accommodate 200-300 m fishing line, mono fishing line 0.4-0.6 mm ., anchor sinker from 50 to 200 g, depending on the weather we will be fishing, as well as hooks No. 8-14 according to domestic numbering with a long forearm. The rigging of such tackle is very simple: a sinker is attached to the end of the line, and a hook higher on the leash is 40-70 cm, which is made of fishing line, which differs from the main line in a smaller direction. This simple and reliable tackle is used to catch flounder. It is better to have 2-3 such gear, since you have to catch not a small rivulet, but a decent stretch of the sea.

Place and time of fishing

The following should determine the time and place of fishing. As for the time of year, I can only say one thing: it is worth catching a flounder only in the fall, since it is in the fall that it comes closer to the shore and becomes accessible to the fisherman, in spring and summer it is kept at a distance of 3-10 km. from the coast. In winter, her activity is almost zero. You won’t have to bother with the fishing spot: it can be any part of the beach outside the city, since there are no breakwaters that impede the approach of the flounder to the shore. The highest activity of this fish is observed at night and at dawn, during the day the nibble decreases. It should also be added that the best nibble is observed immediately after the end of the storm, when residual disturbance is still present at sea.

Now I want to say a few words about the bait, which is used when fishing for flounder. Any small fish is perfect for this - be it firina, anchovy, a small goby, a large raw mussel or other sea mollusk, squid meat and a bull’s heart are also used. All these baits, with the exception of mussels, keep on the hook perfectly, do not go astray by small fish. I also advise you to put on the forend of the hook a few small multi-colored beads, as they encourage the flounder to attack, which increases the likelihood of biting.

Fishing technique

Well that's all, now you can move on to the technique of catching flounder. So you fall in the early morning in the sea, stand in the middle of a deserted beach and huddle in the cold wind. What's next. Next, you need to evaluate the strength of the waves, as well as the possible flow and select the appropriate weight sinker. As I said above, it should be a small cat, so that it can hold the tackle on the flow and excitement. Then we bait and throw our tackle into the sea. If you have several gear, then it is worth throwing them at different distances. For example, at 60 m, 35 m and 15 m, as flounder can be located near the coast, and a little further into the sea. In most cases, you will not see a bite because of a long leash and a hectic sea. And it’s hard to keep track of three rods at once for a long time. Therefore, every 30-40 minutes you need to check the gear. If you haven’t seen the fish for several hours, you need to shift to the right or left along the coast, try there. With patience, you will certainly get the result in the form of a flat fish on a hook. The enemy of the flounder is not strong, only the survival of especially large individuals presents some difficulties.

That's all, I wish you a good time on the seashore.

No tail, no scales, good luck!
