When and how to catch a pike

Pike this fish is known to all fishermen, there is no fisherman who would not catch this predator. She is one of the most popular prey for any fisherman, but not everyone can catch this fish. Catching pike is not an easy task, you need to study this fish, find out what it loves, where it lives, take into account the weather and much more. Only after studying and practice, you will be able to catch it. After all, it’s not enough just to know how to catch a pike, you need to be able to put your knowledge into practice.

Pike can be found in almost any body of water and can be caught all year round.

The pike is “attached” to the area where there is food, it is small, in other words, it is a homebody, and changes its habitat only when its food swims to another habitat. This occurs mainly when changing seasons of the year. Where there is a "white fish", there you should catch a pike! It hunts in its “hunting grounds”, that is, travels little along the pond. Pike will not chase prey throughout the pond but will wait for the victim in ambush. For an ambush, the pike selects places in the undergrowth, under the snags, so you need to catch it in such places along the vegetation, next to the snags. Accordingly, when fishing such places should be caught.

I note that if another, stronger family of predators, such as catfish, predominates in the reservoir, then there may not be any pike there, no one has yet to cancel the competition.

Pike in winter

At the beginning of winter, pike can still continue to lead an active lifestyle, it all depends on the weather. If the beginning of December turned out to be warm, feel free to go catch a pike. As a rule, in December, the water is still open, feel free to catch a variety of spinners.

In January, the activity of fish in water bodies decreases, and pike is no exception. During this period, it is very difficult to find a predator, and even more difficult to interest him. In my experience, it is very difficult for fishermen to catch artificial baits, since in January it is difficult to interest pike, it is even impossible in places.

Usually from mid-February, the pike begins to activate. She begins to slowly leave her wintering place in search of food. Comes in shallow water, closer to the shore.

In winter, you should try to pike in the pits and next to them, that is, where the prey is.

In winter, pike can go out in shallow water for a short time, but only during the thaw. At this time, try to catch with the help of lanterns in shallow water (I talked about winter pike and shallow water here). The winter predator is not particularly active, so you have to look for it!

“One piece of advice is to study the topography of the bottom of the pond in summer, with open water, than in winter.”

On frosty sunny days, even experienced fishermen can be left without a catch. But in cloudy, calm weather can peck at bait fish at least all day.

Winter pike bait

If you are fishing for bait, then you should not linger on the hole if the fish does not bite, you should look for another place, well, or change the bait.

The best option for winter fishing for pike was, is and will be fishing for live bait. For fishing in winter it is better to take a small bait fish, small carp are perfect. If bite is not observed, use the standard live bait, roach or perch, also small in size, will be the best choice. Live bait is put on a hook both behind the back and upper lip.

The success of winter pike fishing depends not so much on the bait as on the choice of fishing spot!

Spring pike

The arrival of spring is just a joy for spinning people. As ice melts, ponds flood the starving spinning pool. And they catch, not just a pike.

In spring, with the melting of ice in the water, with melt water, oxygen enters, which contributes to the revitalization of the reservoir. Still under the ice, in late February and early March, pike swim to spawning places (pike spawning). When the water warms up and aquatic vegetation rises, flocks of pikes scatter along the river in search of habitats, such as the borders of the brow, mouths of tributaries, dumps in pits, places on the border of water and aquatic vegetation, generally calm places with a moderate, quiet course. The most active bite in the daytime. In the spring, catching a pike is easier than in the summer, as it increases the need for food.

In spring, the pike keeps warm layers of water. This is due to the fact that the fry, which makes up its diet, swims exactly there, that is, you need to catch pike in the upper layers of water and in shallow water.

Spring pike bait

In the spring, you can use any pike bait. The most popular are turntables, oscillators, wobblers, spinner bates, jig baits.

Turntables, in my opinion, are the most popular spinners for catching predators in all seasons of the year. Many fishermen in winter catch on turntables, according to the method of sheer spinning. And when fishing in the open water, turntables simply can not do. Better to take medium-sized turntables.

Oscillators manifest themselves in all their glory in the spring, while pike prefers medium sized oscillators.

Wobblers are worth taking the SF (SlowFloating) class, these are slowly popping wobblers, either with a slow (SSS) or medium (SS (SlowSinking)) diving speed. It is such wobblers that mainly attract pike in the spring.

Spinnerbait will also come in handy in your fishing backpack. They will help you wiring in tight spaces. After all, in spring the pike likes to stand in thickets, snags. Spinnerbates have “immunity” to hooks, due to their shape, but not in all cases of course.

Jig baits will also not be superfluous.

Pike in summer

Many fishermen believe that in the summer, in the heat, the pike hibernates. She does not show interest in baits; she stays in one place all day and “sleeps”. This is absolutely wrong!

The summer activity of the predator is largely dependent on the weather. In the heat at high pressure, the pike is slow, passive. In rainy weather with low pressure, you can catch a pike at least all day. Large pike should be sought in deep pits, snagging places, whirlpools. Shallow in coastal areas, along the edges of the grass.

Pike in summer is active in shallow water early in the morning and late in the evening, when the temperature drops slightly.

Summer pike bait

In summer, as in winter, it is easier to catch a pike on live bait. It should be caught in the pits, it is there that the pike can stand in the summer days. Crucians are perfect for live bait.

Spoons should also not be excluded from the fishing arsenal. Wobblers, oscillators, turntables, in general, the whole set.

If you find a deep pit, more than 8 meters, take fishing lures at a depth that follows the DD (DeepDiver) or DR (DeepRunner) class, that is, the deep ones, for shallow water you can take the surface classes SSR, SR (ShallowRunner). But this is all in vain, to accurately determine the wobbler you need, you need to know the depth at which you will catch.

Turntables should be taken small or medium. Although small turntables are considered perch, they are still sometimes able to attract the attention of summer pike.

As for the types of turntables used, it is good to catch turntables with front loading in shallow sections of the reservoir, and with rear loading at great depths.

Since summer pike can stand not only in pits, but also in bushes and snags, you should use unhooked ones.

In summer, you should often change the bait, in search of the one that the predator wants to eat. Also change the winding speed. A stepped leash works well.

Pike in autumn

Fishing in the fall is much easier than in the summer. Since the pike is a "cool-loving" fish, its activity increases. Many fishermen believe that autumn is the best time to catch pike. The most active bite of the day. It should be caught in deeper parts of the water, as the food of the pike begins to move to a depth for wintering. You should also look for driftwood, stones, eyebrows. When clear, warm, sunny weather arrives in the fall, white fish go out to feed in shallow bays and pike naturally follow it, where it must be caught.

“Many fishermen say that in the fall, pike begin to bite after dinner. And it is precisely after lunch that the weather has little effect on pike activity. ”

As a rule, the weather does not particularly affect the autumn bite, but it cannot be ignored. Many fishermen wait for sunny weather for fishing, but they are mistaken. Although the water is cold, in the sun the pike is still sluggish.

"There is an opinion that the predator is activated in the first and last phase of the moon."

From the end of October, frosts are already possible that lower aquatic vegetation to the bottom, thereby opening up new fishing spots for you.

In the fall, they catch pike for everything, and for spinning and for donkey, for live bait. But the most popular type of fishing in the fall is spinning!

Change fishing places more often, the pike does not stand still, and does not stay in huge packs.

Autumn Pike Bait

So that you do not catch in the fall, you need to take a large bait, whether it is a bait or live bait. Before winter, the pike wants to eat, which prompts her to grab a large prey.

As bait, you can take all kinds of spinners. As a result of ice freezing, pike are generally less picky about food, especially if it is hungry.

“If you catch small baits or small bait fish, you can only rely on perch, in rare cases, you get a pike, but it will not be a pike but a little.”

Ways to catch pike

Many ways of catching pike were invented, probably all even the most experienced fisherman will not immediately call you. They catch pike for spinning with the help of various artificial lures, apply such fishing methods as a track (trolling), jig. Also they catch on a zerglitsa, circles, on live bait.
