Roach in February

Each season has its own characteristics related to the weather and conditions inherent in each season. February is usually characterized by a lot of snow, long snowstorms and, despite the fact that this month ends the winter season, sometimes in February there are periods that are characteristic of the most stagnant deaf-and-go. And this is, of course, connected with a thick carpet of snow on ice and the thickness of the ice itself, under which the fish are stuffy in the literal sense.

But at the same time, on good clear days, the sun already warms in the spring and the birds also ring and shimmer with trills, as if spring had already arrived. And as soon as the thaw comes, everything changes dramatically and then February becomes a turning point for the spring revival of both nature and cool.

Captive roach head on a small river

It is impossible to offer universal recipes for successful roach fishing on the Volga reservoir and small river in February, so that it is equally well used both there and there. Too different conditions. But if we talk about a small river flowing within the city or another large village, then the February roach fishing in such places may have certain similarities. And this is due precisely to the proximity of housing, from where fishermen come to the river daily and apply homemade bait, often without taking into account winter features, that is, they roll grain products and cereals into the hole. And roach willy-nilly adapted to peck on a suburban small river for bread and dough even in February. I discovered this to my surprise when I came to our suburban river in order to catch live bait. And he is sometimes not caught where girders are displayed, which is connected with the activity of predators in these places. Therefore, live bait often have to bring with you.

But back to roach fishing in February. So, all morning I classically lured roach from its underwater pastures and teased a tiny mormyshka with a bloodworm, but to no avail. There were bites, but some kind of nervous, flimsy and unfaithful. Carpets rarely came across, as they say, "an hour a teaspoon." And then I noticed that the guy sitting at the hole catches the middle roach quite actively. It turned out that a local fisherman, from a neighboring suburban village, has been catching roach here for dough and bread all winter. Moreover, in successful periods, a roach is good for a small river. And I was convinced that a rather large shrub lives here, in the summer, when I caught a scavenger with a feeder and once decided to plant Bonduelle corn as an experiment. In one morning, several medium-sized roach caught several fish weighing 300-400 grams. But such a roach on the Volga is not ashamed to catch.

Coming to this suburban river in the following days, I took bread and dough along with bloodworms and maggot as well. Often, it was precisely on the bread nozzles that the rafts were taken more actively, but in places. And the closer this place is to the shore, next to which there is a village, the better the roach took on bread nozzles. Although roach-plots have been biting here for bread all winter (about catching roaches in winter), but in February this bite got better and, it seems, in spring the fish will take on dough and bread even more actively, feeling the approach of summer.

This recipe is also not universal for all small rivers, but it should be taken into account on suburban rivers.

What tackle to catch in February

It is generally believed that roach in February is best caught using the smallest mormyshki of silver color and the thinnest fishing line. As it turned out in the process of searching for roach fish for bait fish on a suburban river, the conditions were not very suitable for fishing on a small mormyshka. Despite the size of the river, the current here is quite strong and it is difficult to find any nook with calm water on a mostly direct channel. And where there are such places, it is usually shallow there.

The most catching tackle on this suburban rivulet was a fishing rod, the equipment of which resembles a summer float fishing rod, where a sinker is located above a small hook. It is better to put a sinker round. It resists the flow better. And, of course, unlike a mormyshka, a sinker can be of any weight and size, if only it would keep the tackle in the course. But the leash must be made the thinnest, preferably from a fishing line with a diameter of 0.06 mm. The hook should also be the smallest size. We have a hook number 2.5.
As it turned out, donka works well. It can be equipped with a feeder following the example of a feeder.
