How to plant a grasshopper

The article highlights how to plant a grasshopper.

For fishermen who live fishing, who fish not for profit but for the sake of the process, it has long been known that almost everything that surrounds us can be used as bait and nozzle. And it is true. Especially if you are observant and pay attention to how the river carries its waters, or how smoothly the surface of the lake sways. In some cases, it’s enough to stand in silence for 10-15 minutes and observe what is happening, as you can see that some insects periodically fall into the water, some particles float up, breaking away from the bottom. In a word, constant dynamics, everything is moving. Once I watched a grasshopper hit the river, which was attacked by large fish with lightning speed. Only some 5-10 seconds of action, and so many emotions, so many thoughts. Later, I found out that it was a chub, and that this fish is often caught on a grasshopper, which I later became convinced of. In the article I’ll try to tell you how to properly put a grasshopper on a hook so that a careful chub will please you with its struggle.

I must say right away that you can catch both peaceful and predatory fish on a grasshopper. As for the extraction of the grasshopper, there should not be any difficulties, since this can be done with your hands (which is difficult), and with the help of the net in the morning, when the grasshoppers are not so active yet. I prefer to use grasshoppers for fishing whose length does not exceed 2-3 centimeters, although there have been cases that I caught a chub on larger individuals. Often, when planting a grasshopper, I remove the long limbs of the grasshopper, sometimes I tear off part of the wing, although, frankly, I’ve been doing it less often lately, since I think that the natural look of the bait is more attractive to fish. It is a matter of choice and your preferences. I always put a grasshopper on the hook from the head, sometimes I pull the hook through the whole body, sometimes I just pull it out right away, piercing my head (this holds worse). I tried to plant a live grasshopper and fleshy legs: the method is good enough, because a grasshopper in the water makes movements, which attracts fish, but with this method it quickly breaks off the hook, “idle” bites are observed. The main thing is that the grasshopper mounted on the hook is on the surface of the water. This is especially true when catching a chub. Instead of tearing off the grasshopper's limbs, they can be slightly broken, which I do. The grasshopper holds very well on the hook if the hook is passed through the abdomen and brought out from the back. I consider the hooks No. 5 and No. 7 to be optimal, although I use other numbers as well. If desired, several grasshoppers can be planted on one hook at once, especially if they are small. It is better to leave the hook sting free, so there will be more confidence that the fish will be detected. You should not worry that the tip will scare away the fish, since the attack occurs very quickly and the fish does not “examine” the bait, but immediately grabs it.

By the way, if you wish, you can make a snap from two hooks, which allows you to more securely fix the grasshopper and enjoy fishing. Caught on a grasshopper and fly fishing, and the usual float fishing rod. In my practice, I used only a fishing rod. I recommend that you try to catch a grasshopper. It is very exciting and unforgettable. All the best to you.
