In one of our reviews, we already emphasized the fact that it is physically very difficult to fish for all types of fish (at least freshwater) fish that are known and described in the fishing literature. And we are no exception. So, having vast experience in fishing for pike and perch, burbot, roach and scavenger, crucian carp and many other types of fish, at this stage we still do not have experience in fishing for salmon. As you know, salmon is a trophy and welcome fish in the catches of many fishermen, but due to its territorial distribution, millions of fishermen do not have the opportunity to experience the beauty of this fishing. Of course, you can spend a vacation in the habitats of this fish (for example, get out to Karelia), but we admit that not everyone can afford it. Actually, we will build our description of this fish according to a completely logical plan: we will tell a little about the salmon habitats, give some information about the appearance and biology, and, most importantly, go over how to catch salmon. Of course, there are some specialists in this topic, but it will be all the more interesting, since there is always the opportunity to supplement and describe something in more detail.

Where does salmon live?

To begin with, salmon, which is also salmon, does not live in all reservoirs of the country, as, say, the same pike or perch. Salmon can be found in the White Sea, the Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean and other places.

In order not to bore you with a description of the appearance of this fish (and there are many variations), we recommend the following: firstly, look at the photos that we have selected for you, and secondly, being in a large store, go to the fish department, for sure you can will see salmon.

Salmon spawning

An interesting point is that this fish spawns in fresh water bodies (rivers) for spawning, spawns in the autumn-winter period (depending on the species and environmental conditions). That is, salmon makes peculiar migrations. During spawning, they usually say: "Salmon has gone!". Or, you can hear: "Salmon is coming." There are marine salmon and lake form, which have some differences. Actually, one can write treatises about spawning, and for different forms of salmon, it takes place with some differences and a time frame. But it is striking that, rising upstream, salmon travels simply unrealistic distances - tens of kilometers, until it reaches the spawning grounds.

An interesting fact is that during spawning, salmon changes color, the shape of the body changes somewhat, and this can be explained in more detail by indigenous peoples who have been familiar with this fish since childhood. It is believed that after spawning, salmon die. This is partly true, but not all adult livestock die, some individuals, albeit with difficulty, experience a period of progress and spawning, after which it rolls back down or remains close to spawning grounds, but leaves for deeper areas. Salmon fry live for some time in the river (fresh water), and after they migrate to the sea, the cycle repeats.

As you understand, we give information in a very generalized and compressed form, since if you delve into the intricacies, you will get a manual for dozens of pages.

So, we gradually come to the most interesting, how to catch salmon. But first, we note that even today with sports equipment you can catch fish under a meter or more, weighing up to a dozen or more kilograms. But, depending on the shape of the salmon, the length and weight can vary greatly. Let's just say that fish under 5 kilograms is a good specimen . There are subtleties here, as is the case with many species of fish that are listed in the Red Book and which need to be released back if they are hooked, as well as fry salmon that have not yet migrated. For this reason, do not be greedy, "fry" always without hesitation let go back. Let it grow, give offspring, gain weight. And it must be admitted that many authors write about this, since this topic is very relevant and a real fisherman is one who is on par with excitement and knows how to reason soberly on time and at the right time.

Where and how to catch salmon

Well, now a few words about how and where to catch salmon. Actively salmon are caught with sports equipment at the time of raising this fish for spawning, i.e., during its upstream course. Of the gears, the following are used: spinning, fly fishing, float gear. The latter is used less frequently than the first two, but in some cases it can quite compete with the latter in emotions. From here it becomes clear that salmon is a predator, it perfectly attacks both the wavering lure and the spinner, wobblers, and responds well to the fly.

It is important to note this pattern: salmon biting during the rise to spawning grounds (that is, before spawning) is noticeably better than after, when the fish "rolls" back to their usual habitat. It is difficult to say why salmon bite, someone relates this to the fact that salmon attacks competitors, someone writes that salmon have the instinct of any predator (it is known that pike can be “shaken out”, that is, provoked bite it), well, the third part suggests that salmon biting at this time is a well-founded, physiological nutritional need of the fish. For an ordinary fisherman, something else is important - the fish pecks. The rest is the details. You never know what time of day it is best to catch salmon.

The only thing many fishermen agree on is the relatively night fishing of this fish. This is an almost useless activity, and also a dangerous one, given the nature of salmon rivers.

Spinning Salmon

As for spinning fishing, preference should be given to powerful spinning about 2.7 meters long, medium-sized, and a special emphasis should be placed on the reel, which will experience incredible loads in the event of a bite of a groats.

It is important to understand that the supply of forests should be at least 100 meters, and better - more. To use a fishing line or a wicker is a difficult question.

The fishing line is more versatile and allows you to gently spot salmon, but it also breaks more often, besides it is thicker, which creates some inconvenience when winding on a spool.

The braid is stronger, a larger supply of cord can be placed on the spool, but with sharp cutting, it is quite possible to break the lips of the fish or simply pull the bait out by force (this is the case with a perch when the fisherman makes too sharp a cut). Optimal will be forests with a diameter of 0.3 mm., Although there are variations.

In general, each fisherman himself decides on the spot how and what to catch. You can fish with a wicker, just make a shorter cut, and when fishing with the forest - more sweeping (within reasonable limits, of course).

Of the baits spinning baits are put on spinning, oscillating baits, wobblers, there are many options, both in shape and in terms of color preferences. At the same time, the weight of the lures themselves can be both light (5-10 grams for fishing in quiet waters), and quite heavy, under 25-30 grams. Consider this point when choosing a spinning test.

Please note that it is not enough to choose the right bait, it is also important to correctly conduct it at the bottom. This task is not easy, and if there is no experience, then learning how to correctly control the bait and control it over the fastest course is not so simple. Someone takes 1-2 seasons to do this.

Salmon fishing on a bobber and fly fishing

It is interesting to catch salmon on a float and fly fishing. In general, fishing fly fishing is aerobatics, and catching salmon in the fly is generally a beauty and a classic. Somehow, we will tell you about this type of fishing, but for now, if you have the opportunity to go fishing for salmon, we wish you good luck.

In cooking, salmon is a delicacy, what else can I say, everyone knows the taste of this wonderful fish.

Good luck and all the best.
