Spodding

Sodding ... Enrich the carp dictionary?

Sodding is feeding using a special “rocket” feeder, which looks like a plastic tube. In Europe, it is also known as "spod."

What is spodding

The spod is filled with bait and cast with a powerful rod. After falling into the water, it turns over, and its contents settle to the bottom near your nozzle.

After emptying the "rocket", you wind up the fishing line, refill the feeder and throw it at the same point. And so several times, until the right amount of bait lies around your nozzle.

Watching how fishermen feed “rockets”, I realized that not all of them know how to do this correctly in order to deliver the spod to the given point most clearly and accurately.

Spodding Rod

Spodding will require a fishing rod with a dough of at least 250-300 g, capable of delivering a load of 200-250 g to a distance of 150 meters. It should be comfortable. Some carp farmers prefer fast-fishing rods, while others choose models that bend under load to the hilt.

Now on the market there are many rods, there are plenty to choose from. I prefer GREYS gear, designed, with few exceptions, specifically for spodding.

For long casts

For long casts, I use a 13-foot FX5 rod. I install a reel with a large spool on it. At the moment, my choice is SHIMANO "Aero Technium", largely because it has a slight vibration, and when the line is thrown, the fishing line quickly leaves the spool. I equip the reel with a breaking load of about 7 pounds and shock leaders with a breaking load of 35 pounds.

What methods do I use

I use a lot of different methods, but I prefer KORDA models, because they fit quite a lot of bait, and these “missiles” can be quickly exhausted after emptying them. In order not to cut my fingers during power casts, I always wear a leather fingertip from Reuben Heaton.

At the same point

When throwing the spod repeatedly at the same point, it is important that the spool has a reliable clip for clamping the fishing line, which limits the flight range of the "rocket", which allows feeding more closely. If the small lumps of bait are laid very close to your hook, Mr. Carp may make a mistake and eat a boil with a catch.

Accessories for spodding

I think that very useful accessories for spodding are a bucket with an expanding upper part and a thick marker. You can mark a fishing line with a marker so that you can pinch it into a clip every time in the same place, and it’s convenient to use such a bucket when bait is refilled again - this will allow feeding certain rhythm.

Water drop

There is an opinion that the falling spoils scare away the carp, but I noticed that on many lakes the “rocket” beating on the water acts like a blow to the dinner bell, which, on the contrary, attracts fish with its noise, and it seeks to explore the territory where the bait is .

Start feeding spodding

Before feeding, I recommend that you study the planned fishing area with a marker float . For example, you think that today carp should be located on gravel tubercles.

When you find the desired area of the hard bottom with a marker, loosen the line so that the float sways on the surface of the water. After making sure that the fishing line is immersed in water, put the marker rod on the stand. Take a rod with a spod, which is first filled with gravel, so as not to waste your bait in case of inaccurate casting.

Throwing a spod

Throwing a "rocket" is performed from behind the head. Try putting the spod closer to the marker float swinging on the surface of the water. I hope that he is brought close to the goal on the first try, and if not, reset again.

Finally, the "rocket" fell near the float marker. Now you need to carefully select the slack of the fishing line so that the spod itself does not budge, and fix the fishing line in the clip on the spool. Mark the fishing line with a marker at the clip level, so that later, if necessary, you can set the desired casting distance.

Try to correlate the float with some reference at the horizon level - a tree, a pillar or something else. Now you can remove the marker to free the feeding area from foreign objects. However, do not forget - before you pull the float out of the water, you must abandon the equipment with a nozzle.

Clamping the fishing line in a clip on the spool, you have chosen the desired casting distance, and its direction is set by a landmark on the horizon. Now you can throw at the same point every time. During casts, focus so that the spod always falls into the intended area.

We are interested in the volume of spod for a number of reasons, the most important of which is how much bait can be delivered to the fishing zone at each cast. There is no need to fill the "rocket" to the brim. If you load it three quarters, the bait will not crumble during casting. When using liquid bait, tape the bow of the spod with duct tape so that it does not fall out ahead of time.

Sometimes, when I catch in a lake, where the fish slowly respond to the sound of a falling rocket, I tape the whole feeder with adhesive tape, fill it with water and throw it over.

Activation of the cool

Another option to activate the bite is to mix the poured water with clay from the lake and throw it in the same way as the bait with bait. Then, along with the bait in the fishing zone, there will be turbid water, in which the carp is excited, rotates and foams it in search of food - and it may turn out to be your hooked nozzle.

Less but more often!

Another point - you must remember that the spod must not be filled completely, but throw it more often. Do not throw away all the bait immediately or with a smaller number of casts just because it is easier. Try to catch the rhythm of casting and filling the feeder that suits you, and if you do everything right, you will certainly become a skilled spodder. If you are fishing in a reservoir where feeding with a "rocket" is not practiced, try to throw it at regular intervals so that the fish get used to the sound of a falling feeding trough; if spodding to local carps is not new, I recommend diversifying the intervals. This is especially beneficial at night: when most anglers sleep, you can catch your "bonus".

Do not forget that with spodding you can deliver any kind of bait to the desired point, including even floating components.

I hope my article will allow you to understand the essence of the spodding casting technique if you are not already familiar with it. Well, if you are a qualified spodder, I hope that you learn something new for yourself and you can catch more fish.

Catch with perseverance and let all your carps be big.
