Once again, we would like to provide you with a little generalized information about those fish that you probably heard about, but for various reasons that you haven’t been able to fish on, and for most fishermen, it’s unlikely that they will succeed. Nevertheless, to know about some representatives of the salmon family, in our opinion, is very interesting and useful. On the other hand, life sometimes gives us all surprises, so you may be able to go fishing for the Sig, and the knowledge that you get from us may come in handy. Of course, we will talk about whitefish only superficially, since more complete information can be obtained directly from the specialists in fishing for this fish, but these data will be useful and interesting. As they say, you always need to start with something, and then, if there is interest and opportunities, you can always expand and improve your knowledge and skills.
So, first, we note the data of the scientific classification: whitefish belongs to the genus Sigi, the family Salmonids, and the class of Ray-finned fish. And what is especially interesting, this fish lives not only in our country (the waters of Karelia, in the Urals, for example), but in other countries, giving preference to rivers and lakes with cold water saturated with oxygen.
Sig is interesting not only in the sense that it is the most valuable commercial fish, but also because today many forms of this fish are known. In other words, the species composition of whitefish is very diverse, their representatives have both common features, and may so differ from their counterparts that without special knowledge and atlases, it is very difficult to believe and verify that it is all one genus.
So today, based on data from various sources, it is customary to distinguish the following subspecies of whitefish in the country: whitefish, bounty whitefish, European whitefish, Chidi whitefish, multi-stigian whitefish, Siberian whitefish. At the same time, of the relatively common characteristics for the species, the following can be noted: silvery elongated body, dark fins (the shade can vary significantly), lower mouth (but this symptom is not always the same and noticeable in different groups), a small adipose fin .
It is interesting that whitefish can have different forms in one pond, and, among other things, whitefish forms such as lake form, river type, and pass form are known today. Naturally, each form has its own distinctive features, some of which are determined visually, and some only with a more detailed study. We say all this to the fact that whitefish is very diverse, and even knowing “fish in the face”, it’s far from the fact that, having caught another subspecies, the fisherman with the same simplicity will accurately name the fish.
As we have already noted, whitefish prefers oxygenated water, avoids high temperatures. There are whitefish forms that prefer to stay at a depth, far from the coast, there are representatives of coastal waters. Most often, whitefish is kept in the middle layers of water, and if it is possible to provoke this fish to attack, then most likely the caught specimen will weigh up to 2-2.5 kilograms. To catch a larger individual, you need to try very hard, but more here depends on luck and luck.
An interesting fact is that, unlike most fish known to us, whitefish spawning occurs in the autumn-winter period, i.e., with the onset of cold weather. The most active whitefish bite is observed just before spawning, and in the spring, although this fish remains active throughout the year, and is perfectly caught by amateur tackle both in open water and from ice. Those who at least once have been on such fishing clearly admit that this is a very exciting process, both in the beauty of the places and fishing methods, and in the emotional component.
We can talk a lot about whitefish nutrition, but let's say that depending on the shape of the whitefish, its diet can be: plankton, ground and ground insects, larvae, worms, fish roe, fry, etc. Actually, this listing of whitefish diet is already quite enough to understand some features of whitefish fishing. But before talking about fishing, we note that some species of whitefish are listed in the Red Book, therefore, and going fishing for this fish, you must first visually understand for yourself “who is who” in order not to harm the environment. In addition, you first need to clarify the issue of acquiring a whitefish license, as in some places there is such a rule.
As the saying goes, the choice of gear for fishing whitefish is impressive. Here are some gears: for float tackle, fly fishing, for spinner (spinning), track, for winter lure in plumb line, jigsaw gear and some others.
In winter, whitefish bite quite actively, certainly worse than on the last ice and spring, but its nibble is year-round, which cannot but please the fisherman. In winter, whitefish stands at the depths. But this does not mean at all that fishing is local in nature - sometimes you have to look very hard for fish. The tackle is about the same as when catching perch, with the only difference being that you can put the forest a little thicker, for example from 0.2 mm., And use spinners of a narrower format, without yellow and red threads that put on the perch.
The situation is similar with the Mormuscular fishing gear for ice fishing. There is no universal mormyshka, as well as bait, so you need to try everything. An important point: if the perch, in most cases, takes from the bottom, then the whitefish is not so constant in this regard. Having chosen a place, having drilled several holes, it is necessary to “break through” the entire horizon of water with a spoon or mormyshka. Sometimes whitefish takes from the bottom, sometimes it is active at the surface, literally a few meters from the bottom edge of the ice, and often in the water column. Since whitefish belongs to schooling species of fish, once you get on the school and pick up the bait and game, with some skill you can go fishing very well. This also applies to summer and winter fishing.
Fishing for whitefish in the open seems to be interesting in that the fisherman can explore, firstly, various areas (turns, at the edges, places with different currents, at rubble and ledges, on rifts, etc.), and secondly, go fishing different gears, and thirdly, to feel the beauty of the fish’s resistance, which is so pleasant to haul, whether you have a fly fishing rod in your hands or spinning with a sway or spinner.
We no longer talked about fly fishing, that this tackle to some extent characterizes the fisherman. So, when fishing for whitefish it is advisable to set only those flies that are similar to insects that are active at this moment and at this time of day. The fly with an intricate look, no matter how beautifully the whitefish gave it, the latter is unlikely to take it. The smoothness and weathering of all actions, relative silence, the quality of the fly - this is the key to success when fishing for whitefish fly fishing. And, of course, a well-chosen place.
No less interesting is catching whitefish in spring-summer-fall for spinning and wiring. At the same time, in the summer of insects, biting for fly fishing improves, in spring and autumn spinning and the float work better.
Perhaps this is where we will end. And if you manage to fish for whitefish, we will be happy to wait for your comments and additions, from the first, so to speak, mouth.
Good luck and all the best.
