Burbot fishing spots

Where to catch burbot in the post-spawning period? On the search for promising places for burbot fishing on small rivers and reservoirs.

The winter period for burbot fishing is incomplete due to the spawning period, which lasts from December to January. But already from the beginning of February and in March the post-spawning zhor of this nocturnal predator begins. After the burbot marks the eggs, it slides to the places of its permanent camp, grabbing the small sleepy fish along the way or rummaging at the bottom in search of bottom insects and crustaceans. In February and March, burbot fishing often becomes more important for someone than fishing for pike and other predators. However, one does not interfere with the other. After day fishing for pike at the vents, you can leave the same vents for the night, lowering the bait fish to the very bottom. And then the tackle can be called burbot. True lovers of night fishing do not even get away from tackle, but immediately spend the night in tents or in snow houses - an igloo in which it is as comfortable and warm as in a tent would be a heater. And the snow bricks that blows from the outside with an icy wind do not melt. But there will be a separate article on the arrangement of such a dwelling. Here we will focus on choosing a place for burbot fishing in the post-spawning period.

So where to catch burbot?

The easiest way to find a place for a burbot barn on a small river. If the river bed is flat, which is called a “pipe”, then the most attractive places for fishing for a night predator are on such a river under a cliff, especially if there is an obstacle in this place in the form of even a small toe protruding into the river bed and behind which reverse flow. Often in such places there are trees in the water that fall from the cliff in the spring, washed by large rapid water. It happens that trees fall from a part of the shore, pulling out the soil with their powerful roots. And then they do not lie in the water, but in winter, frozen in ice, but stand obliquely. Here, in the daytime, all kinds of fish will hold on, and at night, a burbot will come out here. But it is not advisable to set the girders and racks in such places, since here the bottom is usually littered with floaters and branches brought and left to lie. In addition, there is a possibility that the roots of a fallen tree stick out immediately. It is necessary to find a cleaner place with less depth near the cliff, and also put some of the gear closer to the main channel of the river, where, most likely, the bottom will be clean, and the snag and pit will be nearby. It is an ideal place for night burbot hunting. (features of night burbot fishing)

Another catchy place for catching burbot from ice will be the border of still water and a river rod around the bend of the river, as well as all the places where the river at least somehow changes its “a la pipe” style to a more complex coastal relief. These are ever wider sections of the river following the narrowed, even part of the channel.

But it should be noted that the burbot rolling down to the permanent parking places, which can be called the home of this fish, often grabs small fish right on the rifts. This was found out when on the forest river Bolshoi Kokshage one of the nights most of the bite grapples fell on the edge of a gully and a pit. And even at the very rifle, the flags of the women were sticking out. Moreover, it was here that most of the fish were caught, since the hooks of some zergolits and stoops were put in driftwood near the pit, and we had to cut the line. There were no such incidents on a clean roll. But such outings in shallow water were not every night. Obviously, this is due to changes in the weather when a small fish changes its feeding position. And then burbots follow.

The most difficult to find places for burbot fishing in the vast expanses of the reservoir

This is what to look for a needle in a haystack. It is most likely to find clusters of burbot in the groves of dry trees that once stood or still sticking out of the water. It is guaranteed to keep burbot. But you need to find in such groves something similar to clearings and clearings among the trees, otherwise the gear will be equally guaranteed to be put in snags. Burbot is a master at such things. If at least one driftwood sticks out at the bottom, the burbot will certainly find it.

Promising and even very promising places on the reservoir are flooded channels of small rivers. Once upon a time, burbot climbed them to spawning grounds in autumn, and it moves along them now, even if the channel is already under water. It is in the flooded rivers and in the areas adjacent to them that there are most chances to find feeding places for the night predator.
