Fishing Classic - Fly Fishing Rod

The fly fishing rod is Aksakov’s oud in the twenty-first century. Simplicity and features of a fly fishing rod. Proper flywheel rigging.

There are more and more lovers of pond and lake fishing with a float, since it is quite unsophisticated and at the same time reckless. In addition, fishing takes place in places of quiet and picturesque, among the mirror water and thickets of yellow-eyed capsules, in the ends of which circles from the fish melting on top diverge.

Young morning ... The ringing silence around and the meadows gray with dew, from which the fog creeps down onto the pond, smelling of damp lowlands, icy nettles and mint. In the warm water lies the light of dawn, and reeds whisper along the banks of the breath of the morning breeze. And at the bud of a water lily, filled with golden light, a float with a scarlet antenna froze. Here the float swung and lay on the surface of the pond, and then got up and slanted down under the water. It’s time ... Cutting! .. And a live ingot of silver rests on the fishing line. And even gold blazes under a sheet of water lily when heavy fishing line is cast on the fishing line the color of old gold ...

These simple landscapes with episodes of catching pond fish attract residents who are tired of the bustle and dust of megacities. And Sergei Timofeevich Aksakov so well spoke about these same dim impressions, who devoted much time to fishing and writing lines that have become classics: “On a green, flowering shore, over the dark depths of a river or lake ... imaginary passions will subside, imaginary storms will subside, ambitious dreams will crumble, unfulfilled hopes will shatter! Nature will enter into her eternal rights. ” Remember ">

Simplicity and features of a fly fishing rod

As already mentioned, a fly fishing rod is a modification of a float tackle and therefore it is also simple. There is nothing superfluous in it, but, nevertheless, it has its own characteristics and requirements. Let's start with a fly fishing rod. Its main difference is the lack of through-rings. The most common material from which high-quality rods are now made is carbon fiber, since this material, with its strength and lightness, allows the angler to easily hold the rods 5-7 meters in length and fish for large fish. In addition, when fishing with a fly rod, you have to keep the rod on weight, you still have to play along with tackle. This is reminiscent of fishing for jigsaw or simulated wiring.

Flywheel selection

The most popular for fly fishing are considered rods 6 meters long. And the choice of fishing rod should start from the knees. They should be long enough. This will give the necessary lightness, rigidity and correct fishing line. Also, when choosing, you need to pay attention to the thickness of the butt. A thinner comel suggests that the rod has good characteristics and therefore formation. Another important detail is the tip of the rod. It should also be thin and flexible, which allows you to cast the lightest equipment and mitigate jerking fish on a thin fishing line. And, despite its subtlety, bending under load along with the rod along its entire length, the tip of a good carbon-plastic rod has sufficient strength. In addition, anglers often equip fly-fishing rods with rubber shock absorbers, which are durable rubber, fixed with an external sleeve on the tip of the rod, if the tip is thin. On more powerful rods, the gum is attached with an inner sleeve. A cone-shaped plug is usually placed from the thick end of the penultimate knee, to which shock absorber rubber is attached, going to the tip of the rod and pulled out of the sleeve before fishing. The cap is fixed on the fishing line, with which the cap can be removed from the end of the knee and change the worn rubber of the shock absorber. The plastic plug has a thread along which the plug cone can move in one direction or another. This allows you to fix the plug in the desired level of the penultimate knee, and therefore set the required tension of the rubber shock absorber. The strength of the rubber shock absorber should always be greater than the strength of the leash, otherwise when hooking or biting strong fish there is a chance of losing all the equipment. In order for the shock absorber to extend well from the last knee, which is the tip of the rod, silicone grease can be dripped into the hole in the sleeve at the rubber outlet.

Some anglers replace the rubber damper by adding an even finer tip, trimming and attaching the thinnest part to the tip of the rod. Others put homemade shock absorbers from a piece of a medical rubber tube or similar hollow gum, simply putting it on the tip of the rod and attaching the finished snap to it. Many do without a shock absorber at all, believing that it complicates the tackle and changes its structure. In a word, each individually finds and selects for himself convenient equipment.

The fishing line is attached to the tip of the rod using a plastic connector, the inner diameter of which must be matched to the diameter of the tip of the rod. Super Glue is usually used to glue the connector. Having opened the connector, insert the loop of the finished snap-in on the reel into it and slide the connector lock. The loop is better to make self-tightening, as often the usual blind loop slips out of the mount.

Fly Fishing Tooling

Equipment for different fishing conditions is collected in advance on reel with designations of the length of the rod, the diameter of the main fishing line and leash. And here there are rules. Using fishing rods with a length of 5 meters, you should select floats with a lifting capacity of 0.5-1.0 gr. For rods with a length of 7 meters - 1.5-2 gr. Longer rods require larger floats. It can be floats with a loading capacity of 2.5-3 gr. Inconsistency of the float with the length of the rod will prevent a full casting, especially with a fresh wind.

For successful fishing you need to set the exact depth. Therefore, the place of fishing should be previously studied using a depth gauge. For this, it is not necessary to use proprietary depth gauges. It is enough to hang a weight on the hook, with the help of which to determine all changes in the topography of the bottom.

Leashes of a strictly defined length must also be prepared in advance. Usually they are stored in a special povodochnik with the indicated dimensions. If a hook comes off during fishing, just put the exact same leash. By fastening a hook instead of a detached one, the angler risks changing the length of the equipment, which has already been precisely measured under the depth at the place of fishing. As a leash, you can use planks or even glazing bead segments with safety pins, the distance between which should correspond to the length of the leash. On these pins the necessary number of spare leashes is fixed.

The sizes of the hooks are selected under the attachment used in fishing. In fly-fishing, maggot, bloodworms and semolina are most often used. Therefore, hooks are required small, somewhere No. 10-20 of the international classification. The most used hooks in amateur fishing No. 12-18. Ready-made kits with hooks tied to leashes are very convenient, in particular, Gamakatsu products. On bags, the diameter and length of the leash, as well as the size of the hook, are usually indicated. To avoid cliffs and gatherings of good fish, it is advisable to replace the leashes and hooks after each fishing.

Fly fishing involves the use of thin fishing line, which causes the greatest number of bites even if the bite is sluggish. Usually fishing lines with a diameter of 0.08-0.1 mm are put on leashes. Accordingly, the thickness of the main fishing line should be slightly larger.

Important for the sensitivity of gear is the correct loading of the floats. Floats with a thin but hollow antenna are loaded somewhere up to one third of it, so that only the tip of the antenna is visible from the water. If the antenna does not have buoyancy, then the float can be loaded to the boundary of the antenna and the body of the float.

For fly fishing, sports floats with an antenna and a long thin keel are used, where the fishing line is mounted in silicone cambric. Using insulated kebriks can damage the fishing line because they are quite rough. It should be noted such a detail as a loop for fishing line in the upper part of the float. The higher the loop is, the less impact the water resistance has on the float, especially when fishing with a hold.

Drop-shaped floats are recognized as the most universal floats for amateur fishing. They are less sensitive than, for example, a “needle” type float, but work better in conditions where wind and current are present. And such conditions are common in almost every fishing trip. Needles proved to be excellent when fishing for crucian carp on ponds that were quiet and sheltered from the wind. Since they work well on the rise, they can also be indispensable for catching bream, especially in conditions of quiet water.

By their shape and nature of the bite, these floats are very reminiscent of goose feathers, dear to the heart of each floater. After all, it was floats from a goose feather that became classics with the light hand of Sergei Timofeevich Aksakov. Probably, every fisherman began with similar floats that lie so nicely on the water from a careful bite of a bream or crucian carp. Sometimes needles or the smallest and thinnest feather floats are indispensable when fishing roaches during the dead time for small maggots or mulberry-greens. Since this fishing takes place in the coastal zone, equipment can be facilitated. And there will hardly be a need for casting for the full length of the equipment. Rather, accuracy is required to get in the window among the water lilies.

Weights-pellets are collected on the main fishing line, depending on the capacity of the float and are not tightly clamped on the fishing line so that they can be moved if necessary. Clamping on the fishing line and removing grains without damage is carried out by special pliers. Fishermen usually do these operations simply with their teeth, but the high toxicity of lead should be taken into account. Moreover, it is still possible to clamp the sinkers with your teeth, but take them off ... When the sinkers are already on the fishing line they are moved in combinations that depend on the fishing conditions. For surface fishing, where the emphasis is on small fish, the weights are shifted closely to the hook itself. For fishing in the water column on a slowly sinking nozzle, the main part of the sinkers is distributed closer to the float, and one pellet can be left at the hook.

After the sinkers are dialed onto the fishing line, you can connect the main fishing line and the leash in a “loop to loop” method, and then assemble the finished equipment on the prepared standard size reel. The defined and uniform size of the reel for snap allows you to measure the length of the fishing line by the number of its revolutions on the reel. It remains only to prepare the equipment for the rod of the required length and put the output data on the reel, that is: length, diameter of the fishing line and leash, size of the hook. The inscription can be made with a felt-tip pen or marker. On the banks of a river, pond or lake, you only need to attach equipment using a connector and you can throw tackle. And then in anxious impatience to expect a miracle, which for the angler is the very first bite.
